"Horsemanship is the art of mastering our own movements, thoughts, emotions and behaviour. Not the horses." ~Mark Rashid
What is Natural Horsemanship?
Natural horsemanship is a way of being and working with horses based on respect and trust with an emphasis on communication through pressure and release rather than fear, intimidation and pain. It is a horse-centred approach that focuses on building a strong and harmonious partnership between horse and human. With a deeper understanding of the horse's perspective, natural behaviour, emotions and needs, we begin to experience increased empathy and compassion for our equine partners, fostering a deeper connection.
Natural horsemanship considers the different needs of each horse's unique personality and temperament. Trust is built through establishing and respecting boundaries as well as through consistent, gentle and patient interactions that allow the horse to feel safe and secure. Emphasis is placed on the importance of using natural body language, energy and intention, along with subtle cues to communicate and create an open dialogue. Understanding and refining non-verbal communication leads to heightened body awareness and clearer communication for both horse and human promoting mutual respect and a cooperative relationship.
Horses learn best when they feel safe, trust the partnership and feel bonded to you as their leader. Developing a strong partnership requires patience and consistency as it takes time for the horse to learn and to trust.
Regardless of equestrian discipline, the natural horsemanship approach encourages development in self-awareness, confidence and emotional intelligence leading to personal growth and transformation and, in turn, a more balanced and well-rounded horse.
