“What a serene, beautiful and truly magical experience!
... how peaceful it was to connect with the land, the radiating sun and the energy in the circle; to listen to the natural sounds of bird songs and the wind. The energy was so refreshing and absolutely alive! Rainbow, our horse guide for the session, sensed exactly what was needed for the group, and Nicole led a beautiful body scan meditation which led us deeper into our body mind, bringing forth anything in need of healing. It felt deeply cleansing and grounding and the transformational inner work that was started in the circle continued long after the session ended. This experience brought me back to myself, reminded me what is truly important to carry forward, and what I can afford to leave behind as I go forward in my life. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone, whether or not they have any experience with, or affinity for, horses.”
Why Meditate with Horses?
At its core, when we meet with horses in meditation, we are meeting spirit to spirit in a form of energy healing. Within the electromagnetic energy field of these magnificent creatures, our own heart rates are influenced. Through entrainment, horses can bring us into balance causing beta waves to decrease as we drop into relaxed-state theta and alpha waves and into our parasympathetic nervous system. It is in these relaxed states that the mind rests, the body restores, creativity flows, intuition is heightened and unconscious feelings surface. As effective as they are at slowing our heart rates, horses are equally effective at entraining, energizing and unblocking our chakras and, in doing so, both the body and mind can return to coherence and a felt sense of inner wellness. This coherence is at the heart of all of our work with horses. Over time the ability to access this state, where the heart, mind and emotions are in alignment, becomes second nature whether the horses are physically present or not.
In addition to entrainment, horses have millions of mirror neurons making them experts at understanding
non-verbal communication, behavioural nuances and the intricate highways of our nervous system. Horses are inherently unbiased, non-judgmental and truthful when reflecting and responding to our neurobiology. Horses have prey brains while humans have that of predators. As a result they are genetically wired to be highly attuned to the largely invisible language of our intentions, our energy and physical bodies. The ability to bond and partner with them is, in fact, a biological miracle worthy of further exploration.
In the most practical sense, horses require our complete focus and attention, if for no other reason than safety. The unbroken awareness that is present in mindfulness, meditation and living in the "now" is surprisingly easy to achieve when in the company of a 1200 pound animal in free liberty. Distraction by the needs of tomorrow or yesterday's mistakes will create an incoherent state that the horse will make immediately obvious. Their intuitive nature offers exceptional biofeedback with real-time insights into current emotional bodies, keeping us grounded in the present moment.
This experiential learning of self through horses is a seated and guided mindfulness meditation. When we meet in a circle, we sit in unity, in wholeness, compassion, equality, connectedness and in acceptance of the cyclical nature of life. We create a container that will serve to amplify the energetic experience while also simultaneously slowing down our collective energies and creating stillness as we enter into embodied self-awareness. The horses are free to engage, share and hold space however and with whomever they choose while we remain as witnesses. They are always free to leave the circle so that we can find meaning when they choose to enter into it.
Every circle hosted is as unique as the horses involved, the day, the time and the people present. These all introduce elements of the unknown. Some circles are characterized by a stillness as horses drop into meditation alongside or work to align chakras and entrain hearts. Other times they choose to make connections with everyone, just a specific few and sometimes only one. You will learn a simple and powerful tool to communicate boundaries with the horses so that you can establish boundaries for your experience should a horse choose to engage with you. This, in itself, is powerful.
Schooled in the loving language of natural horsemanship, our horses spend their time out in the open promoting increased theta brain wave activity that supports calm and balanced temperaments. They are selected into programs for their desire to engage with humans, hold space, their sensitivity for healing work and ability to consistently remain in a balanced and harmonious state.
